Why Tilly?
Pen Names are great for so many reasons. Some of it is for anonymity. And that's a part of my reason for using one. But another part of using a new name is the freedom that comes with it. As S.J. Tilly, I get to live my books. I get to submerse myself in the worlds that I create. I get to pretend that this, writing, creating, is all I do. So yes, I AM S.J. Tilly. And as her, I get to be the badass bitch that I want to be. I get to say the shit that I want to, but maybe shouldn't.
So why Tilly? My grandma was an amazing, caring, tough woman. And she secretly loved reading old school romance novels. She's no longer of this world, but I think she'd get a big fucking kick from my books. So, her middle name was Mathidle (Norwegian spelling of our "Matilda") and the nickname often given for Mathidle is Tilly. And so, S.J. Tilly was born.
So grab a shot of Aquavit, raise it up, plug your nose, and drink it down. Here's to grandmas everywhere and the imprint they leave on our souls.
